Divisio Lycopodiophyta (some call it Lycophyta) is a group of vascular plants (Trachaeophyta) that are part of the Kingdom of Plants (Plantae). This group is considered to be one of the oldest vascular plants that have survived to the present day, with fossils found to be as old as 410 million years ago. Its main characteristic is that it has small and primitive leaf blades called microphylls. Each strand of microphyll has only one leaf vein, which is different from leaves (megaphylls) of ferns (narrow sense) or seed plants which have intricate patterns. This group is still often considered to be a part of ferns, because of the similar alternation pattern of offspring, with the dominant sporophyte (spore-producing generation) form, although the main cross-section of the main body axis is simple, known as the protostele.
